In the  Energy & Climate division we are looking for a candidate at the location Freiburg as

Student Assistant

for a Master thesis „Economic evaluation of heat storage systems in district heating networks”

(start date: 1st November 2024)

About your task

In the research project "Optimised integration of thermal aquifer storage in district heating systems" (OptInAquiFer), we are working with research partners and three practical partners to analyse the possibilities and limitations of using high-temperature aquifer storage in district heating networks. We consider the geology, technical possibilities of storage integration and economic aspects of storage operation. The aims of your work are:

  1. Comparative analysis of different methods for the economic evaluation of investments; building on this.
  2. Development of an evaluation methodology that considers the benefits of thermal storage (focus on aquifer storage) in district heating networks as holistically as possible. Aspects of sector coupling also play an important role here.
  3. Critical examination of the limitations of the developed methodology, also with a view to how investment decisions are currently made in energy supply companies.

About you
