In the Energy & Climate division we are looking for a candidate at the location Freiburg as
Student Assistant
for a Master thesis „Potential of aquifer storage in district heating networks in Germany”
(start date: 1st November 2024)
About your task
In the research project "Optimised integration of thermal aquifer storage in district heating systems" (OptInAquiFer), we are working with research partners and three practical partners to analyse the possibilities and limitations of using high-temperature aquifer storage in district heating networks. Based on the findings obtained by analysing three specific district heating networks, we want to assess the potential of aquifer storage in heating networks throughout Germany. The aims of your work are:
- Estimation of the potentials in the three geothermal regions of Germany (Upper Rhine Graben, North German Basin, South German Molasse Basin) in QGIS; this can be based on potential estimates of renewable heat for district heating.
- Critical evaluation of the identified potentials with regard to, among other things, exploration risks and development of a methodology to adequately take existing risks into account in potential assessments.
About you
We work in an interdisciplinary team, where our team does research regarding the transformation of the buildings sector towards more energy efficiency and climiate neutrality. You are interested in shaping the heating transition and are motivated to familiarise yourself with new topics, develop and apply your own ideas. You have experience in processing spatial data (e.g. in QGIS).
