The market for carbon offsets has surged in recent years. From 2016 to 2020, the volume of allowances sold and retired in Germany alone increased more than sixfold – and a further rise is expected. But does it really make sense to compensate for emissions via mitigation projects? Which frameworks are in place? And what about the quality of the carbon credits?
