AI and sustainability

Artificial intelligence is radically transforming our society. Perhaps you just use it to quickly translate a text, generate a photo or get a film recommendation? That’s just the tip of the iceberg. AI systems can drive public transport, support medical diagnostics and can even be used in decision-making that has a major impact on people’s lives – at national borders or in access to public services. Artificial intelligence offers many benefits, but it also poses many risks. They relate to social issues such as discrimination, but also to the environment and climate. One outcome is that energy demand for AI is soaring. The current issue of eco@work looks at artificial intelligence from a variety of perspectives. It focuses on safety and regulatory issues and, of course, the protection of the environment and climate.
