Exnovation - Actively managing change

It is the counterpart to innovation: exnovation describes the phasing out of unsustainable structures and technologies, materials and products. Political governance of exnovation to protect human health or the environment, as in the case of asbestos or leaded fuel, is a necessary but also a viable step in many sectors. The nuclear phase-out and the ban on CFCs in fridges are other examples. This latest issue of eco@work looks at the challenges associated with exnovation. It refers to two specific examples which are the focus of the current exnovation debates: the combustion engine, and electricity production from coal.
