The transport sector is not yet contributing anything to climate change mitigation: its emissions in 2018, at around 163 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents, were at the same level as in 1990. But the German government’s target is to reduce these emissions by 40 to 42 percent by 2030. Is that still achievable? And if so – how?
This issue of eco@work looks at the transport transition and the question of how it can at last be implemented. As the researchers from the Resources & Transport Division show, it needs more than alternative propulsion systems, more than electromobility. Germany needs a modal shift in transport – with less use of private cars and a greater emphasis on public transport, walking and cycling.
