Mediation process at the Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITE) in Karlsruhe
Michael Sailer from Oeko-Institut in Berlin will lead the mediation process at the Institute for Transuranium Elements. The Ministry for the Environment of the State of Baden-Württemberg is publishing new information on their website about the mediation process. The webpage will be providing the public with background information, documents, and new developments in the process.
Background: Mediation for expansion plans
Following a suggestion of the Ministry for the Environment, a mediation process for the expansion plans of Institute for Transuranium Elements in Karlsruhe will take place in the next few weeks. Michael Sailer will be leading the process. The institute is planning to build a new laboratory and warehouse in which nuclear fuel and other radioactive substances are to be stored. These plans have met with opposition.
Bringing together all those involved
The mediation process aims to help show conflicting positions openly and highlight possible common solutions. In this vein all those involved will be brought together: representatives from the ITE, from the Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen and Linkenheim-Hochstetten communes, from the BUND Karlsruhe as well as representatives from the BW’s Ministry for the Environment and the District Office Karlsruhe (Landratsamt).
Transparency and participation
Sailer will be leading a series of round-table discussions and independently supporting all parties to find a common solution. By and large the process will be a public one. The Ministry for the Environment will be regularly publishing dates for the meetings, documents, presentations and explanations on their website – with the exception of sensitive safety-related information on the ITE’s research.
More detailed information on the mediation process and related documents can be found on the Ministry for the Environment of the State of Baden-Württemberg’s webpage on the mediation process [in German language]. http://www.um.baden-wuerttemberg.de/servlet/is/86072/
