Oeko-Institut announced as partner in an international climate alliance

The Open Climate Network (OCN) observes and assesses climate protection activities in selected countries. The OCN is an independent partnership aiming to document country-specific efforts to reduce emissions and thereby provide motivation for accelerated implementation of measures. By collecting and analysing relevant information from the network’s partner countries, a database is to be created which enables the effectiveness of different implementation measures to be estimated. Amongst other things, indicators will be developed which can show “green growth”. This and other OCN information could allow national debates about the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to develop further.

Currently the network’s partner countries include: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the member states of the European Union, India, Japan, Mexico, Norway, South Africa and the United States. The EU member states are represented by Oeko-Institut.

The Open Climate Network is developing a series of assessment metrics and is currently in the pilot phase of first country assessments. In 2012 the results are to be published for the first time and then reviewed annually.

The network partners came together at an international workshop which took place in Washington DC on 13-16 September 2011. The aim was to refine the assessment tools and to prepare for the subsequent steps.
