The 2020 emissions gap: What are the next targets?

Germany is about to miss its climate goals, specifically its target to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared with the 1990 baseline. The 2019 projection report produced by the Oeko-Institut for the German Environment Agency (UBA) shows a reduction of just over 33%. But what has caused this gap, and which policy measures are needed to ensure that Germany achieves its 2030 climate targets, at least? These questions are explored in this latest issue of eco@work. We look at a number of Oeko-Institut projects and provide detailed insights into the transport, building, agriculture and power sectors.
As always, we include an interview with an external expert: this time, it is the turn of Christian Noll from the German Business Initiative for Energy Efficiency (DENEFF), who provides an update on Germany’s energy efficiency performance and explains what can be done to maximise its potential.
