Availability and use of biogenic waste and residues in the energy system (electricity, heat and transport sector)

The aim of this research project is the evaluation of the potential of biogenic waste and residues that can be exploited from a technical and ecological point of view, to analyse the most suitable conversion technologies, taking into account their respective material properties, and to draw up utilisation paths that meet demanding technical, economic and ecological criteria for a sustainable overall utilisation concept and make a relevant contribution to the energy mix of the future.

First, potentials and conversion technologies are investigated on the basis of a literature analysis in order to identify utilisation paths in the later course. Technology profiles describe the range of technology availability and provide the basis for evaluating the use paths for waste and residual materials. A technical deployment matrix is used to create an overall utilisation concept that comprehensively depicts the role that waste and residual biomass will play in the future energy system (power, heat, and transportation sectors). The result shows a clear prioritisation of products for energy supply until 2050.
