Briefing on the Key Issues at Stake at the 72nd Session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 72)

The briefing summarises the main negotiating topics at the 72nd session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and the progress made since the 71st session. It describes the positions of the various Member States, international organisations and non-governmental organisations and develops recommendations for the European Parliament's Environment Committee.

This concerns in particular - the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport, the roadmap for an overarching IMO strategy adopted at the 70th session and its implementation and the progress of the greenhouse gas emission strategy to be adopted in 2018, and - air pollutant emissions, energy efficiency and the development of a global reporting system on ship fuel consumption and the use of heavy oil in the Arctic.
