This project analyses the potential of forest management practices in different European regions to increase soil and biomass carbon stocks while maintaining other ecosystem services. It gathers existing scientific evidence and examines effects on carbon sequestration on forest biomass and soils as well as forest resilience to climate change. It examines existing forest management approaches in Europe and analyses their ability to support carbon farming to meet European commitment to be carbon-neutral by 2050. Specific emphasis is given to soil carbon protection and accumulation. Finally, it evaluates problems and barriers for the implementation and presents some guidelines for the European Union to help formulating the mechanisms that can incentivise farmers.
