Concept for the communication of life-cycle costs to consumers

In the framework of this study, a concept has been developed to communicate life cycle or operating costs in order to reduce information deficits during the purchase process on the part of the consumer. The development of the concept is based on the methodological foundations of life-cycle costing and investment calculation, as well as on scientific findings in the fields of marketing, consumer behaviour and relevant parts of behavioural economics. In addition, requirements of all stakeholders involved (i.e. manufacturers, trade sector, consumer organisations) are taken into account. The stakeholder survey was based on structured expert interviews. The approach which is derived from the former comprises the following areas: (1) criteria for the selection of suitable product groups, (2), general requirements, (3) calculation methods and (4) input parameters. Finally, recommendations on the organizational implementation are given.
