Design and implementation options for a recycling label: scope of application, criteria, target groups and certification process as well as legal framework conditions

The recycling label project for the UBA explores the possibilities and limitations of introducing a label for products with regard to their recyclability and recycled content. The aim is to conduct a feasibility study for a recycling label. First, there will be a scientifically based analysis and assessment of which product groups and, if applicable, which materials would benefit from labelling indicating recyclability and recycled content, and whether this would be feasible in Germany in the short to medium term. The study will also evaluate the likelihood of these labels making an effective contribution to strengthening the circular economy. The result will be a concept for the introduction of a recycling label, including a detailed description of the steps necessary to implement the concept, the various aspects and options to be considered with regard to recyclability and the use of recycled materials, and the necessary legal requirements.
