Determination and valuation of the immissions from vinyl chloride and 1,2-bichloroethane in the vicinity of the Solvay Rheinberg Industrial Park

As part of this project, Müller-BBM GmbH first carried out immission measurements of the two substances in Rheinberg-Ossenberg and Rheinberg-Millingen over a period of six months in each case. In the second step, the engineering office for meteorology and technical ecology, in cooperation with Müller-BBM GmbH, carried out numerous modelling and dispersion calculations in order to find the modelling whose calculation results came closest to the measurement results in Rheinberg-Ossenberg and Rheinberg-Millingen. The modelling thus determined was then used to carry out the final calculation for the surrounding area. The cancer risks to the population in the vicinity of the Solvay industrial park caused by vinyl chloride and 1,2-dichloroethane emissions were then determined and assessed by the Öko-Institut on the basis of the results of the measurements and calculations. The project was supported by a working group consisting of representatives from the town of Rheinberg, SolVin GmbH & Co. KG and several citizens' initiatives.
