Development and application of a valuation basis for resource-efficient software, taking into account the existing methodology

The focus of the research project lies on the influence of software on the consumption of energy and resources. To begin with, it is aimed at systematizing the existing methodological approaches on the evaluation of software, and at determining the influence of software on energy consumption and hardware utilization, the ultimate objective being to introduce criteria on the basis of which software can be examined and evaluated in terms of its environmental impact. Perspectively, these criteria shall be appropriate for expressing the requirements of an ecolabel such as a Blue Angel for software. Within the scope of this research project, first proposals for criteria and an according system of evidence will be developed. The findings of the project will be compiled in the form of a manual for energy- and resource-efficient software development.
