Development of sustainability criteria for "green" synthetic fuels in the context of the recast EU Renewable Energy Directive

The project addresses the main challenges for the environmental impact of PtX fuels which are produced based on electricity from the public grid. Starting from the requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directive of 2018 (RED II), criteria are presented under which such fuels could be accounted for as 100% renewable under Article 27 of RED II, and thus would be eligible to contribute to the renewable energy target in the EU transport sector. In order to allow for the introduction of the new PtX technologies into the market, a phased approach for the implementation of the criteria is presented.
