Environmental protection through integrated planning processes at the interface between urban and infrastructure planning

The design of technical infrastructure has a significant impact on the environmental use and environmental quality of cities. Often, however, infrastructure plans are downstream supply planning, which are only incorporated into the urban planning process at a late stage or, as specialized planning, provide unilateral specifications for overall spatial planning. Consequently, there are far-reaching interactions which, if well coordinated, have the potential to strengthen environmental protection in urban and infrastructure development. in urban and infrastructure development. The work in the project was guided by four research questions:

  • Where are the environmentally relevant interfaces between urban and infrastructure development?
  • How can these environmentally relevant interfaces be addressed within the framework of formal and informal planning instruments and processes of urban and infrastructure planning - e.g., by means of integrated urban development concepts - be addressed?
  • What are the obstacles to better coordination at the environmentally relevant interfaces of urban and infrastructure development?
  • How can these obstacles be overcome?
