Impact of the use of forest biomass for energy purposes in Germany on German and international LULUCF sinks

The project investigates impacts of current wood energy use in Germany on forest sink performance and what changes can be expected due to existing support instruments. The current and future impacts of German wood energy use on international LULUCF sinks are also considered. The consortium models wood use and forest development in Germany and calculates the greenhouse gas balance of forest energy wood. By modelling the impact in different scenarios, the following questions are addressed:

- How do existing support instruments and additional developments enhancing wood energy use affect wood energy sourcing?

- Under which circumstances must an increased import of forest biomass for energy use in Germany be expected and what influence would this have on the corresponding LULUCF sinks?

- Under which conditions does energy wood use represent a mitigation measure in the context of climate protection?

- How effective are different quantitative and qualitative restrictions on wood energy use in terms of protecting the carbon sink capacity of forests?
