Informal e-waste management in Lagos, Nigeria - socio-economic impacts and feasibility of international recycling co-operations

This project has the overall objective of enhancing capacity of West Africa and other African countries to be able to tackle the growing problem of e-waste imports coming from the developed world, including Europe. Under the first component, a fact finding study will be carried out on flows in used and end-of-life e-products imported into several West African countries (Nigeria, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia and Ghana) by land and by sea, in particular from European countries. Under the third component, an in-depth socio-economic study on the functioning and the sustainability impacts of the e-waste sector in one country (Nigeria) will be prepared. This will include a feasibility study of international co-operations between African SMEs and European recycling companies by combining their specific competitive advantages in e-waste disassembly and material recovery will be explored.
