Nature conservation analysis of the fourth national forest inventory

The project pursues three main objectives:

1. This project describes and interprets the state of German forest stands in 2022 and their development from 2012 to 2022, with a focus on nature conservation and ecologically-relevant characteristics that can be derived from the data of Germany’s National Forest Inventory.

2. We determine whether the data of the National Forest Inventory is suitable for serving as a basis for fulfilling the reporting obligations on forests under the EU Nature Restoration Law. In particular, the indicators for forests from Article 12 are analysed and it is examined whether ‘satisfactory’ levels of the indicators can be reliably mapped with the help of the data at national level.

3. The results of the analyses of the national forest inventory data are presented in a comprehensible manner, both textually and graphically. Informative research including graphs are presented in the final report, an illustrated information brochure is produced and two infographics with easy-to-comprehend texts are created for use on social media.
