Nature protection and advanced biofuels

There are limits to an increased use of biomass for energy and material purposes. Besides biophysical limits there are competing uses that reduce the available biomass potentials. So-called advanced biofuels are biofuels that are produced from biomass raw materials that do not compete with food crops, have a low impact on other land uses, and achieve high greenhouse gas emission reductions. The project carries out an analysis and evaluation of effects of advanced biofuel pathways on nature conservation issues, focusing in particular on the impact on biodiversity. Another objective of the study is to illuminate the future relevance of advanced biofuels in the light of various policy objectives and technical and economic development trends. The project develops criteria for taking into account nature conservation concerns.
