Options under public international law to increase resource efficiency: Analysis and evaluation of the international legal framework regarding its impact on the consumption of raw materials and development of options for action to anchor resource efficiency at international level

This research project aims to support from a legal and political science point of view the goal of the German Federal Government to strengthen the international awareness of resource protection. It analyses how international law and other international steering mechanisms can contribute to a more efficient use of resources and a reduction in their consumption.

The study focuses on abiotic resources (metals or ores, other mineral resources, fossil resources) and their exploitation, processing, or other utilization. Possibilities for increasing resource efficiency and other resource protection are assessed along the entire value chain. Based on the analysis, concrete courses of action are to be explored and policy recommendations to be developed.
