Potential impact of municipal measures for national climate action. Effects of nationwide strategic climate action elements and their potential for the National Climate Initiative

This project aims at quantifying the climate protection potential of German municipalities, analysing how the existing mandatory tasks of municipalities can be used more effectively for climate protection, quantifying the effect of climate protection managers on the use of and access to funding and on emissions, and identifying and, if possible, quantifying further effects of the work of climate protection managers. In addition, public relations work is carried out that is tailored to the target group.

Municipalities are important actors in climate action. In order to support national climate targets effectively, the municipalities’ scope of action needs to be defined and supplemented by targeted measures. Municipalities can take considerable influence on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions within their fields of action. Municipal climate action managers can play a decisive role in GHG mitigation.
