Research group on market-based instruments for ecosystem services – driving forces, impacts and design potentialities at the example of climate change mitigation and nature protection. Project 1.1: Analysis of global governance structures regarding the emergence and design of market-based instruments for climate and biodiversity policy

The sub-project critically examines the strengthening of economic instruments in the discourse on "international environmental governance" as well as in concrete policies. It analyses the causes of this strengthening and evaluates it against the background of the effectiveness of the existing instruments mentioned. Specifically, the following questions are addressed:

  1. What are the causes and processes of institutional change towards markets and market-based instruments for ecosystem services in international climate mitigation and nature conservation?
  2. How does the international introduction of selected market-based instruments affect land use and the provision of ecosystem services?
  3. Beyond concrete instruments, how is the international policy discourse on market-based instruments for biodiversity and ecosystem services shaping up?
  4. Which discourse coalitions promote this discourse by means of which discursive strategies?
