Research supporting the implementation plan of the German Bioeconomy Strategy

The Ministry of the Environment (BMUV) and the German Environment Agency (UBA) have a guiding function for the implementation of sustainability goals in measures for a sustainable bioeconomy. This research project provides scientific support and assistance to the Ministry of the Environment and the German Environment Agency.

To this end, the state of the art in science will be reviewed with a view to the above-mentioned three core tasks in order to assess the questions:

· What characterises environmentally sound biomass use and biomass production? How can they be reconciled with planetary boundaries and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular the protection of climate and biodiversity?

· What would be measures for the implementation of a sustainable bioeconomy with special consideration of environmental and nature conservation aspects?

· How can a prioritisation of biomass flows towards sustainable biomass uses be designed? Which criteria and indicators are suitable for covering the broad field of possible uses in the bioeconomy?

The work is carried out on the basis of desktop analyses, literature research and own analyses and concept developments.
