Review of the LCA methodology developed by the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA)

In the framework of a technical expertise, IFEU-Institute, Oeko-Institute and Prof. Dr. Birgit Grahl supported the internal communications process at the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt [UBA]), aimed at updating UBA’s LCA method. Specifically, in a first work package, a status report on characterization models for impact assessment – which is needed in the context of the update progress – was compiled, requirements of life cycle inventories and standardization were derived and recommendations on the further development of impact categories were made. As part of the second work package, recommendations on allocation, data uncertainty, and significance of results were developed. In a third work package, development opportunities for evaluation and assessment were discussed.
