Socio-economic assessment and feasibility study on sustainable e-waste management in Ghana

In order to draw a comprehensive picture of Ghana's e-waste sector, the project conducted a socio-economic study with focus on both, positive and negative social, environmental and economic impacts. Drawing from this analysis the project also elaborated on meaningful improvement options that have beneficial effects, in all, environmental, social and economic terms. Thereby the feasibility of international co-operations between African small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and European recycling companies by combining their specific competitive advantages in e-waste disassembly and material recovery was explored. The bases for this feasibility study was the fact that many types of e-waste contain significant amounts of valuable metals that can only be recovered in an environmentally sound manner in some few sophisticated facilities in Europe, Japan and Canada.
