Study on methods and considerations for the determination of greenhouse gas emissions reduction objectives for international shipping

The study contributes to the development of the IMO’s comprehensive strategy for reducing of greenhouse gas emissions from ships, in particular the level of ambition of this strategy. It identifies

emission pathways for international shipping that are consistent with the objective of the Paris Agreement to keep the global average temperature increase to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C;

technical, operational and possibly other options to reduce emissions or improve the fuel efficiency of the shipping sector and the development of technology roadmaps;

policy measures to ensure that the shipping sector complies with the emissions pathways.

Relevant stakeholders were involved to validate the approach and to disseminate the study results among them.
