Study on the evaluation system for the specific properties of the host rocks and configurations considered, with a view to repository safety

The regulations on which the site selection procedure for a repository for high-level radioactive waste in Germany is based describe the search process for the selection of the site with the best possible safety and the criteria to be used as a basis for safety-oriented consideration. It does not specify the specific method of comparison, the number of areas to be investigated in Phases I and II, or the narrowing down of host rocks and host rock configurations in any of the three phases. On this basis, the project addresses the question of whether in Phase I Step 2 of the site selection procedure a direct comparison of areas with different host rocks is possible and appropriate. For this purpose arguments and applications are developed.
