The significance of federal-level strategies on spatial development for environmental policy

Challenges for spatially-relevant environmental and nature protection have strongly increased. Critical issues include preserving areas for the expansion of renewable energies, spatially adapting regions to climate change (among others, with regard to flood protection), reducing land consumption and creating linked open spaces to protect biological diversity.

The goal of this research project is to evaluate the implementation of environmental goals and principles in regional spatial planning using practical examples. Recommendations for action are then developed to strengthen environmental considerations in comprehensive spatial planning as well as for spatially-relevant sectoral planning and policies. The project is led by the Leibniz Institute of Ecological and Regional Development (IOER).
