Transformation to a completely greenhouse gas neutral Germany

The goal is a completely greenhouse gas neutral Germany. Therefore, this project determines from a scientific perspective what paths are necessary to achieve the climate protection goals and what measures need to be underpinned from a political perspective in order to implement these transformation paths. Accordingly, the solution space for a greenhouse gas neutral and sustainable society is further differentiated. In addition, the study examines which contributions to solutions could be provided by carbon sinks. This includes on the one hand natural sinks (e.g. forests or peatlands), on the other hand technical solutions such as capturing CO 2 from the air or pyrolysis coal from biomass.

Furthermore, a PES instrument (Payments for Ecosystem Services) for rewarding the environmental services of forests towards climate protection is developed, which is to contribute to the implementation of the climate protection targets in the LULUCF sector in the Federal Climate Change Act and thus to greenhouse gas neutrality in Germany.
