Update of the climate protection concept of the Protestant Regional Church in Baden (EKIBA) for the period 2022 - 2032

Church communities with public corporation status in Germany are important actors in climate action. On the one hand, they are both major employers and consumers of energy with their real estate, vehicle fleet and employees. On the other hand, via their members they have an indirect influence on the behaviour of many people. It is therefore very important to strengthen climate action activities of churches in Germany.

In this project, a climate action concept for the Protestant Regional Church in Baden was developed. At 2,800 buildings in more than 650 communities and more than 17,000 employees, the Church is an important actor in climate action, with specific framework conditions.

In a first step, energy consumption data of the buildings and mobility were collected, a greenhouse gas balance was drawn up and reduction potentials were estimated. In a second step, a catalogue of climate action measures, a continuity strategy and a controlling concept were developed. The entire process was accompanied by comprehensive stakeholder participation.

At the same time, a corresponding climate action concept for the archdiocese of Freiburg was developed in the spirit of ecumenism.
