Workshop Series UNFCCC Playbook

While the production of a single T-shirt generates only a small amount of GHG emissions, the textile industry is responsible for around 10 percent of global climate-damaging emissions, more than shipping and all international flights combined. At the same time, the industry itself is affected by climate risks - including physical risks such as drought in cotton cultivation or flooding in production countries such as Bangladesh, as well as risks associated with the transition to a low-carbon economy (so-called transition risks). Examples of this include the pricing of fossil fuels or the EU Strategy on Textiles announced for 2022, which is intended to support the transition to a climate-neutral, circular textile industry.

In response to these challenges, the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change published the Climate Action Playbook for the textile and apparel industry in 2020. The Charter aims to achieve net-zero emissions across the entire industry by 2050 at the latest.

In order to give companies an initial overview of the significance of climate change for the textile industry, the accounting of GHG emissions and suitable reduction measures, GIZ is organizing a four-part webinar series on behalf of BMZ and in cooperation with the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action as part of the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles and the Business Scouts for Development, which is organized and conducted by the Oeko-Institut.
