What is now common practice for electricity-consuming products has so far not been implemented for data centres: a harmonised and easily understandable efficiency label. Within the PeerDC project ("Public Energy Efficiency Register of Data Centres", https://peer-dc.de), commissioned by the Federal Environment Agency, the Oeko-Institut has developed a proposal for calculating and designing an energy efficiency label for data centres. The label is based on key performance indicators from the DIN EN 50600 series of standards and, with the "load correlation", defines further IT-specific key figures that describe the effectiveness of the information technology used at different workloads. The energy efficiency label for data centres developed here represents a contribution to the discussion for more transparency in the digital economy.
