Safety of Fusion Power Plants

A review study of existing literature is performed, to identify the spectrum of possible incidents and accidents for selected future fusion power reactor concepts. For these incidents and accidents, the means to avert, prevent or control those events or at least to mitigate the radiological consequences are described. This safety concept of fusion power plants is compared with the existing safety concept of fission power reactors, especially the concept of defense-in-depth with its associated five levels of defense. The aim of the project is to inform the federal ministry for the environment about the current status of nuclear safety of fusion power plants.
