The changeover from the NEDC to the WLTP and its impact on the effectiveness and the post-2020 update of the CO2 emission standards

The CO2 emission regulation based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) has successfully decreased emissions in chassis dynamometer measurements during type approval procedures. However, CO2 emissions in operation on the road have only decreased to a minor degree. In consequence, CO2 emission standards will gradually be transferred from the NEDC to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Duty Test Procedure (WLTP) from September 2017 until 2021. The new procedure is expected to deliver a better representation of real-world emissions and to effectively reduce real-world emissions to the required level in the future.
