The Oeko-Institut, in collaboration with the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH, and under the framework of the Partnership for Responsible Battery and Metal Recycling (ProBaMet), will be hosting a side event at the upcoming Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions COP 25 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The side event, titled: ‘’ Bridging Gaps in E-Waste and End-of-Life Battery Policies & Standards: Strategies for Effective Implementation’’ will focus on:
1) Role of cross-sectoral collaboration to address gaps in environmentally sound management of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries in LMICs;
2) Strategies for effective industry standards and improved performance in end-of-life lead-acid battery management in LMICs;
3) Call for Action on Africa's Lead-acid Battery Recycling Industry.
The second and third focus points of the side event will highlight key outcomes from the First African Conference on Upgrading the Lead-Acid Battery Recycling Sector, held earlier this year in Abuja, Nigeria, under the ProBaMet project.
A key initiative emerging from the conference is the Call for Action on Africa’s Lead-Acid Battery Recycling Industry, led by scientific experts and civil society. This initiative underscores the urgent need for reform and modernization of the rapidly growing lead recycling industry in low- and middle-income countries. The reform aims to:
✅ Promote environmentally sound recycling practices
✅ Strengthen regulatory frameworks and standards enforcement mechanisms
✅ Protect public health and the environment
At this side event, we aim to elevate the Call for Action on a global platform, encouraging further signatories and urging stakeholders to collaborate in a coordinated effort to drive meaningful and lasting reform in the sector. Key speakers for the event are:
• Dr. Tadesse Amera - PAN-Ethiopia
• Dr. Leslie Adogame – SRADeV Nigeria
No Registration needed!
Participation is free and available both in-person and online.
When and where: Monday, 28 April, Geneva Switzerland | 6:15-7:45 p.m. (GMT+2)| Room 14 or online using the participation link
Who should attend: This event is designed for stakeholders and delegates from government authorities, civil society, and the private sector working with or impacted by lead-acid batteries.
We look forward to welcoming you at the side event!
Warm regards
