The interdisciplinary research project “BIOSTORE: Biologization of Batteries and Materials: Developing the Battery of the Future”, located at the University of Münster, addresses the pivotal challenge of sustainability in the battery sector. BIOSTORE aims to investigate the potential of the so-called biologization of batteries: a technique through which some commonly used battery components are replaced by bio-based alternatives. This process potentially enables the development of more sustainable energy storage devices while ensuring comparable performance. This research project, funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MKW NRW), brings together experts from a wide range of disciplines, including biology, chemistry, engineering, political science, economics and law.

Against this background, the BIOSTORE Workshop “Sustainable Battery Systems – Bridging Technology, Policy and Governance for a Renewable Future” brings together experts from academia, government, NGOs, industry and the interested public to discuss the opportunities and challenges in bridging innovation policies and regulation in the transition towards more sustainable battery systems. In addition to identifying and discussing scientifically and socially relevant research questions, the workshop aims to facilitate knowledge transfer between different stakeholders.

This project is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Sciences of the State of North Rhine Westphalia.

Dr Johannes Klinge (Senior Researcher at Oeko-Institut) will contribute to this workshop with a Keynote-Lecture on "Sustainable batteries and where to find them".
